From the desk of the Building Official;
 
While the Medina City Building Department regulates construction here in the City, the larger mission of our department is to help create and maintain a thriving environment to live, work and do business in. Through our plan reviews, building inspections and property maintenance enforcement, I believe we are positively contributing to the future of Medina’s structures and cultivating a healthy environment for all of those who use them.
 
One of our goals is to justify the costs associated with building permits. I believe there is much value in a building permit and all that comes with it. Building permits provide a framework for builders to follow that has been proven to be cost effective. During the permit process, we provide guidelines for construction and require contractors to register with us to insure professionalism. Included with the permit fees are help with construction plan preparation, reviewing plans for Code compliance, and issuance of approvals for those plan submittals. In addition, the permit fees cover building, electrical and mechanical inspections.  Last but not least, your permit fee is used to maintain a recorded archive of all projects in the City that can be accessed at your convenience.
 
The Medina City Building Department has a knowledgeable and helpful staff consisting of State of Ohio certified Building Inspectors, an International Code Council certified Permit Technician, and counter staff. Their expertise with building construction as well as zoning requirements here in Medina makes completing projects here a pleasant experience.
 
During the building inspection process, we act as a third party, and we feel that this is beneficial to both property owners as well as the contractors who do the work for them. For the property owner, we provide protection for their investment by verifying that all of the pieces of the project were put together correctly and per Code. For contractors, our records of inspections and approvals will forever provide support that they did the work properly.
 
The Medina City Building Department also enforces property maintenance within the City of Medina. We are proud of our old historic structures and have directed our focus on preserving the integrity of our older neighborhoods. In many cases, owners of properties in the city that fall into disrepair are unable to maintain them. We put much effort into helping connect these owners with available programs and volunteer organizations to assist them in maintaining their property.
 
Through the combination of planning, building, and property maintenance assistance, the Medina City building department has as its goal the continued wellbeing of our community.
