In 2010, the City of Medina was awarded a grant from the Ohio Department of Development to develop a Micro-Enterprise Program.
A Micro-Enterprise is defined as a small business of five employees or less, one of them being the owner. The grant award was for $40,000. Of the $40,000, $15,000 is to be used for small loans to qualifying micro-enterprise businesses.
The remainder of the funds are to be used for training and technical assistance programs.
The City of Medina, in partnership with several entities, has put together a seven week training course for residents who are interested in starting their own business. The program is called the "Medina Small Business & Entrepreneur Basics Program".

The training program has an introductory price of $45.00 for all seven sessions. Classes will be held at the Medina County University Center.
The training is open to all residents, including Medina County and beyond. The class size is limited so early enrollment is encouraged.
The training will culminate in a working business plan that can be used to approach lenders when applying for financing.
The grant loan portion stipulates that only Medina City residents who are low to moderate income whose current business or proposed business is in Medina City, may apply for the loans. Loans requests have a minimum of $2,000 and a maximum of $10,000.
Residents must complete all seven sessions of the training program to be eligible for making loan application.
