Special Departments of the MPD

The Specials Unit of the Medina Police Department was formed in 1957 for the purpose of supplementing the regular Police Department of the City of Medina.

The organization is under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police, and may be called upon whenever it is deemed necessary to maintain law and order and in the protection of life and property of the citizens of Medina. They also assist in searching for missing children and older adults, traffic control at parades, as well as crowd control at school athletic events and city functions.

The members of the Unit have voluntarily offered their services because of their interest in police work and for the betterment of the community. The Unit averages 5,000 hours a year in these services and have donated over 75,000 hours to the community in the past 20 years. The maximum membership of the Unit is limited to 30 officers.

The majortiy of the officers are state certified, with some members achieving a higher degree of training as road certified.

The Unit assembles for regular meetings on the first Tuesday of every month, with additional monthly training sessions. They are governed by the Constitution and By-Laws established by the Unit, and the Rules and Regulations of the Medina Police Department.
